Kung Hei Fat Choy, which means “wishing you to make lots of money or a fortune,” is popular for two reasons. It’s mostly said among Cantonese during the New Year. Chinese who emigrated from Guangdong Province to the United States and Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Myanmar, were in search of a better life or fortune as it might be perceived. Naturally, foreigners assume that this is the only Lunar New Year greeting. Mandarin speakers who wish their friends and loved ones a Happy New Year, or Hsin Nien Hui (“Wish you well in the New Year”), are less inclined to greet others with Kung Hei Fat Choy.
Secondly, Kung Hei Fat Choy was the name of a 1985 movie, about the Money God, which was produced in Hong Kong. Since then, many international media have published Kung Hei Fat Choy as headlines during the festival.

A Focus on our Members:
Blair Montgomery - Blair has been nominated for the President elect position for July of this year, please join us on March 10th for the vote on our next slate of Directors.
Blair Joined Rotary some two and half years ago and while he did not have any experience with Rotary he had extensive experience with a very similar organization Toastmasters.
Blair because of his years with Toastmasters at a senior level he brought to the club public speaking skills, leadership and Coaching. He came with vast background of business leadership with Pacific Press, and understood finance of business. That experience led him to quickly be nominated for the position of Treasurer for the club.
Blair has been a great member and executive, he is at all of the meetings, he gets there first and leaves last. He has personally supported all of the events, and fundraising drives. He has a Paul Harris award and that happened within the first 18 months.
While Blair got some great training from the outgoing treasurer Angela, Blair went over and beyond and has studied and figured out and reported out on many aspects of Rotary.
Given that Rotary and Toastmasters have joined together it is beneficial to both the Rotary District and Toastmasters to have a senior person at Toastmasters also be in a key executive position with Rotary, we are all glad that Blair continues to serve on the Board.
Three New Paul Harris Milestones for our Club
This fund drive season in Nov and Dec saw many generous members in our club funds, and as part of that 3 members achieved Paul Harris status. Given that we cannot award until we are together for lunch, please watch and wait until we can announce in person the recipients.
Paul Harris Fellow
What is a Paul Harris Fellow?
The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation. ... In 1969, the Foundation unveiled the first Paul Harris Fellow medallion at the Rotary Convention in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA.
Many other notable figures have been named as Paul Harris Fellows, including U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Russian President Boris Yeltsin, U.S. astronaut James Lovell, UN Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar, and Jonas Salk.
More recently Dr Anthony Falci and our own Dr Bonnie Henry were awarded the Paul Harris medal.
